A mortgage is usually the biggest financial commitment most of us will make in our lifetime, but some lenders make it easier to manage your borrowing than others.

Traditionally, most people will have managed their mortgage either in person or over the phone, but many lenders now let you manage your home loan online or via an app.

So whether you’re looking to view your mortgage balance or make an overpayment, here we outline the ways some of the biggest lenders let you manage your mortgage. Bear in mind that lenders might change the ways you can access their services, and whether you can use all the features they offer might depend on the type of product you have.

We know that lots of people are worried about covering their mortgage payments at the moment, given a series of increases in the Bank of England base rate which has seen interest rates soar. If you’re worried about keeping up with your mortgage payments, it’s worth contacting your lender as soon as possible to discuss your options. This month, the government introduced its mortgage charter which includes a range of support measures to help people who are struggling with their mortgage payments. You can read more about these in our article Government announces support for mortgage holders. All of the lenders we’ve listed here have signed the charter, so while some haven’t outlined exactly what support they’ll offer their customers, if you’re struggling you should contact them and they should be able to offer you help.

Speaking to an experienced mortgage advisor can help you to understand your options and get a great deal on your mortgage. If you’re looking for expert mortgage advice, you can speak to an independent mortgage broker with Unbiased. Every advisor you find through Unbiased will be FCA-regulated, qualified and unconnected to product providers – so they can offer you truly unbiased advice.

How can you manage your mortgage?

Generally, lenders provide one or more of the following options to manage your mortgage:

Over the phone

This is one of the most common ways lenders let you manage your mortgage. Nearly every lender we’ve listed here allows you to manage your mortgage over the phone with them. You’ll need to have your mortgage account details to hand before you can make any changes or request your current balance, for example.

In-person

Some lenders let you manage your mortgage in person at one of their branches, however, with more bank branches closing each year, this option is becoming less viable for many. In fact, very few of the lenders we’ve listed here explicitly say that they offer mortgage advice services in branch, but some may offer it if you get in touch.

Online

Online banking has become one of the most popular ways for people to manage their bank accounts and the products that banks offer, such as mortgages. Not all lenders have a function to manage your mortgage online, but here we outline the ones that do.

Apps

An extension of online banking, some lenders let you manage your mortgage through their banking apps. Some simply show you your mortgage payments and balance, while others have functions that allow you easily make overpayments.

First Direct

  • Check your mortgage account details – such as checking your account number as well as viewing monthly payments, your repayment type and your account balance
  • Apply to switch to a new deal – if you’re planning on switching deals you can check what rates are available and apply for a new mortgage if you’re eligible
  • Check your Early Repayment Charge – If you’re switching product or paying off your mortgage, you can see if you need to pay an Early Repayment Charge
  • Change your mortgage term – You can apply to either extend or reduce the length of your mortgage
  • Manage overpayments – you can make overpayments, change your regular overpayments, or manage your preferences
  • Get a property value estimate – There’s a tool that can tell you what your property might be worth based on the prices in your area.

You can make or apply for these changes without advice, but it’s important to make sure you’re completely comfortable with them before you do. If you need advice, you can call Nationwide to speak to one of their advisors.

Santander

Santander says it wants you to be able to manage your mortgage “wherever, whenever and in your own time”, which it allows you to do by giving you the option to manage your mortgage either through online or mobile banking, or over the phone.

Online or mobile banking

If you have a mortgage with Santander, you can use the Santander Mobile Banking app or Online Banking to manage it. All you need for this is your mortgage account number and the mobile phone number that’s currently registered for One Time Passcodes (OTPs) to hand.

The options you have for managing your Santander mortgage this way are the same whether you’re using the online portal or the app. Through these methods, you can:

  • View the details of your current mortgage – this includes checking your interest rate, outstanding balance, monthly payment amount, next payment date, and transaction history
  • Search and apply for new mortgage deals
  • Manage overpayments – through the app or online you can make single overpayments and set up regular overpayments
  • Change your current mortgage term or repayment method
  • Apply to borrow more money after getting an instant decision in principle
  • View settlement figure – if you’re planning to repay your mortgage in full, this function will allow you to see the full sum of any fees you’ll be charged
  • If you have a flexible offset mortgage you can also increase or decrease your payments, make a one-off payment, request a payment holiday and withdraw money from your mortgage.

Telephone

If you can’t do what you need to via online or mobile banking, or you need to speak to someone, you can call Santander for more help and support:

You can contact them on 0800 092 3881. This line is open Monday to Friday 9am – 6pm, and Saturday 9am – 2pm. It is closed on Sundays.

Santander mortgage support

Santander has a Mortgage Support page that you can visit to see your options if you’re struggling with your mortgage payments with them.

Barclays

Barclays says you can manage your mortgage with them easily and securely through their app and online banking, over the phone or in person. Here’s how you can manage your mortgage with Barclays:

Online banking

You can use Barclays’ online banking function to manage your mortgage 24 hours a day. Once you’ve registered for online banking, you’ll be able to:

  • View your mortgage account balance and details
  • See recent transactions
  • Download mortgage statements
  • Make regular overpayments
  • Make a one-off overpayment using your Barclays savings or current account, or by debit card
  • Manage the Direct Debit for your payments
  • Apply to switch to a new rate.

The main difference between online banking and the app is that you’re able to make regular overpayments and manage your Direct Debits through online banking, but not via the app.

The Barclays app

If you manage your Barclays mortgage through the app you get nearly all of the same functions as online banking but with a couple of different features. With the app you can:

  • View your mortgage account balance and details
  • See recent transactions
  • Download mortgage statements
  • Make a one-off overpayment using your Barclays savings or current account, or by debit card
  • Apply for additional borrowing
  • Apply to switch to a new rate.

So while through the app you can’t make regular overpayments, or manage your Direct Debit, you can apply for additional borrowing.

Telephone

If you need to speak to someone about your mortgage, the Barclays Mortgages line 0333 202 7580 is open Monday to Friday 7am – 8pm, Saturday and Sunday 7am – 5pm and 9am – 5pm on public holidays.

How can I manage my mortgage online if my lender doesn’t offer this option?

Not every lender offers you the ability to view and manage your mortgage online, but even if that’s the case, you might still be able to view your balance and payments through other banking apps.

Certain apps, like Monzo and Money Dashboard allow you to add your mortgage to your account, enabling you to see your balance, mortgage term, payments and interest rates.

Some banks also provide this function in their mobile banking apps, so it’s worth checking whether yours does.

While you won’t actually be able to make changes to your mortgage through these functions, you should at least be able to check on your balance whenever you want.
